52 Week Crochet Challenge Week 4

Hallo my Friends!

How did you learn to crochet, or who taught you?

Crochet has been in my life for a long time, over 50 years. When I was a wee bit girl of about 6, my grandmother Poldi, who was a seamstress from profession, gave me my very first own crochet hook and a ball of yarn and declared it was time for me to learn to make things for myself. Until than I loved to watch her work on many different things, from sewing, to knitting and of course crocheting.

My Granny was a very patient woman, even so her schedule was very full with a big family and also with the sewing she did for other people and her family, but also a huge garden. I really don't know how she managed it all, but somehow she did.

Well from that ball of yarn my first potholder came to life. It looked pretty bad, if I remember correctly, but my Granny had nothing but praise for me. You got to love her just for that. So a new passion had been born, as I from that point in time never put down my needle again, well maybe for a minute or two, but never for long.

Granny also taught me to sew and knit, which I still both do from time to time, but my passion will always be with Crochet. Thank you Granny!

Now a little update: This has been a rather hectic week for me and continues to be that way, but I did manage to crochet quite a few more rows on one of my Hall of Shame projects, the Granny Stripe Afghan ala Attic 24. I think the colors are starting to really pop out and I am having fun once again working on it. It might become a finished project yet, lol.

Thought I would leave you all today with a couple more pictures that speak of Spring time finally being here.

See me initials spelled out in Daffodils?
How cool is that?

Till next time.......

  3. Lovely post Erika, thanks for sharing how you learned to crochet. I love the colors you chose for the blanket, they are pretty and work well together. And thanks too for the flower picture - I'm hoping to see some real ones hopefully soon!

  4. I love daffodils, they are so bright and heart warming to see.
    The ES is really cool!!

I'm self taught. I've always wanted to crochet and although I can knit had never been able to get the hang of the hook.

I finally got to grips with it a couple of years ago and haven't put my hooks down since.
I was confused by the US/UK terms and although I'm english, I've stuck with the US terms for stitches as I prefer them.

I love that blanket. It's one of my 'To do one day' projects as well.

    :)

  5. OK, two things:
First, from your profile pic, you do NOT look remotely old enough for anything to have been in your life for 50 years!

Second, your work is beautiful, and thank you for sharing all those cheery colors and flowers with us :)

  9. Erika, just stopping by again to say that your granny stripe is coming along beautifully! I love your color choices. Such a happy-looking blanket. :) My giant granny is still a smallish rectangle but it's growing every day. Thank you for sharing your work on the It's Finally Friday Link-a-Long at the Go Crochet Crazy blog. I know everyone's going to love it. :)

  10. Hi Erica, I love your Hall of Shame project, sometimes projects need to be done in small chunks just to keep us interested. Thank you for sharing how your Granny taught you how to crochet, Granny's are so patient and she sounds a wonderful person. I am self taught, with books and now I am still learning using blogs and YouTube. Blogging has really let me spread my wings with crochet, it has made me braver and more adventurous. You have a lovely blog, Linda xx

I found your blog today with the link you left on "It's Finally Friday" Link-a-Long at Go Crochet Crazy: Theme -- March MADEness. My blog is called Crochet with Linda Dawn and this week I am showing the progress I have made with my "Granny square Grape Waistcoat project"
